The AP/GC girls and boys wrestling teams will both be in action Thursday.
The girls will compete at the Battle of Waterloo at Young Arena. Head Coach Joel Reints on the opportunity to compete in one of Iowa’s premier regular season dual tournaments.
“Really neat opportunity for the girls,” Reints says. “What they’ve done over the last couple years to make a name for themselves is exciting, and that’s why they’ve got this opportunity. I’m just excited to see them go out and perform. We’ve already won a tournament this year, an individual tournament, not a dual tournament. And this is kind of our first experience wrestling girls duals really. It’ll be a fun environment. It’s a little different, the team aspect of it. Everyone gets to sit right there along the mat and watch, and you root for your teammates and it’s exciting that way. It’s a little bit different atmosphere and I’m excited to see how they handle it.”
Action will begin at 9:00 a.m.
The boys will join #9 (1A) Jesup at a triangular at Hudson, which will air on 99 The Wave. The Falcons (3-2) will take on the Pirates at 6:15. Hudson enters 6-2.
“They always do a good job of filling their lineup, and they’re similar to us. They got some really experienced kids and then they have some weights where we got some opportunity. And when we’re even, we’ve just got to go out and wrestle harder and be tougher and hopefully we come out on the right side of that.”
Reints says the 9-0 J-Hawks will present a stiff test.
“They’re tough right now. We wrestled them last year, they gave it to us pretty good last year. And I don’t know, whatever they’re doing over there, they got it rolling. They’ve got some pretty tough kids in the lineup. And like I said, it’s a measuring stick, and we’re just going to see where we’re at. And win or lose, we just want to go out and fight them.”
Hunter McBride is 7-0 at 190 and Jesse Brouwer is 7-1 at 215 to lead the team in wins.
Coverage will begin at 6:05 p.m., followed by the first dual at 6:15. The Falcons will face Hudson in the first dual and Jesup in the second dual.
