The West Fork girls and boys basketball teams will look to enter Christmas Break on a high note with a Top of Iowa Conference East doubleheader at Saint Ansgar on Friday. The Warhawk girls have won five straight and the boys have won six straight in the series.

West Fork girls (5-1, 2-0 TIC-East) will play their first game in a week after Tuesday’s game at Central Springs was postponed. The Warhawks last game was a 42-38 comeback victory over Newman Catholic on Friday, December 13th. The Warhawks offense is at their best when they keep the ball moving, averaging 12 assists per game. Leah Weaver leads scoring with 19.5 points per game and Brylie Hubka has defended the boards with 5.5 rebounds per game.

Head Coach Rodney Huber on the drive of the team to continue to get better.

“I think we’re a really good team, we haven’t met our full potential yet. It’s early on in the year here and hopefully we can keep just stacking good practices and good game performances and continue to get to where we wanna be,” says Huber. “I think this group is very determined to do all the right things, practice hard, play hard and play for each other. That’s really good to see and we’re just gonna try to keep on getting better.”

Saint Ansgar girls (5-0, 4-0 TIC-East) won 60-47 over Nashua-Plainfield in conference play on Monday. The Saints are a dangerous team in transition, averaging 20 steals per game. Amelia Porisch 15.6 points per game at 36.4% from the field to lead the Saints.

West Fork boys (2-2, 1-1 TIC-East) lost a tough non-conference road matchup 82-46 to undefeated Madrid on Thursday. The Warhawks are selfless on the offensive end averaging 15 assists per game. Three Warhawks are averaging double figures in scoring including Ashyr Wiseman with 19, Xavier Baptiste with 13 and Nolan Schreckengost with 12 points per game.

Head Coach Abe Maske on managing back to back games.

“St. Ansgar is usually pretty big, physical, so we’re gonna need to be at our top game when we go up there,” says Maske. “More importantly, I think we’re gonna have to, as coaches, really work on how we’re gonna utilize our bench, utilize our players to provide enough rest through the week, through games and practice. To ensure that we make it to Friday as healthy and as energized as we can.”

Saint Ansgar boys (3-2, 2-2 TIC East) lost 57-29 to Nashua-Plainfield in conference play on Monday. The Saints have worked hard on the offensive boards averaging 12 per game. Jayce Schwiesow leads scoring with 8.8 points per game.

Action begins at 6:15 p.m. in Saint Ansgar.
