The Belmond-Klemme boys basketball team entered the break on a roll as winners of four of the final five games, including wins over North Union and North Iowa in the final games of 2024 last week. With that winning stretch, the Broncos have made program history. Improving their record to 4-3 overall, they moved one game above .500 for only the second time in the last 11 seasons.
Head Coach Justin Meyer on building momentum to continue to push their record in the right direction.
“The last 11 years we haven’t been more than two games over .500, so that’s one semi goal of ours coming back after break we put ourselves in a good spot,” says Meyer. “We didn’t get started off so hot at the beginning of the year but we’re stringing some wins together now. I think’s definitely gonna springboard us into break and then out of break.”
The trio of sophomore Brody Heifner, sophomore Kysen Lamb and junior Griffin Paulsen have helped the Broncos gallop past opponents in this stretch. Heifner leads the team with 16 points at 46.7 percent from the field and 7.6 rebounds per game. Lamb adds 15.6 points per game. Paulsen rounds out the trio with 12 points and 3.9 assists per game.
In the Broncos’ wins, they have held opponents to 55 points or fewer and have had at least 14 steals.
Meyer on continuing to make strides on the defensive end entering the second half.
“Just continuing the trajectory in terms of continuing to improve there. I really think that we can get to the point where we dictate a little bit more defensively what other teams can do. We just want to make sure that we keep defensive intensity and effort. I really think that our defense is going to be the catalyst for us winning a lot of games, even more so than our offense.”
Belmond-Klemme will return to the floor on Friday, January 3 by hosting Forest City to tip off their 2025 schedule.
