It’s been a remarkable first half of the season for the AP/GC girls wrestling team. The Falcons have competed in six traditional tournaments, with first place finishes at Belle Plaine and Iowa Falls-Alden.
Among the standout wrestlers, returning two-time state qualifier Grace Storjohann at 120 is off to a 29-1 start, including a third place finish at the prestigious Dan Gable Donnybrook Tournament as an unattached wrestler. Head Coach Joel Reints says Storjohann has continued to impress.
“She’s been wrestling really well all year, and has just been dominant all season,” Reints says. “What can I say? I mean, she’s so strong and really turning it on now and gonna have a good postseason I think.”
Another team highlight was winning the seventh place bracket at last week’s Battle of Waterloo, which was the first time the program has wrestled in a dual tournament in its three-year history.
With the recent announcement of Colfax-Mingo as the team’s destination for the state qualifying meet, Reints has a positive outlook for the postseason.
“I think we could have done worse. We could have probably been in that Osage regional, which to me looks a little tougher with Osage, Decorah, Charles City and Sumner-Fredericksburg, some tough teams up there. There’ll be some tough wrestlers down at Colfax for sure, but I like that one versus Osage. So like I said, we’ve got to wrestle with confidence and just do our thing, show up on regional day, and hopefully we get a lot of girls to the state tournament.”
The Falcons will resume their season at a tournament at Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont on Friday, January 3.
