Hampton-Dumont-CAL goes 2-1 at Independence Duals

The #19 (2A) Hampton-Dumont-CAL boys wrestling team went 2-1 and placed second at Friday’s Independence Duals. They defeated East Buchanan 81-0, fell to #6 (2A) Independence 41-32 and defeated #17 (2A) Anamosa 40-39.

Against East Buchanan, the Bulldogs got pins by Luke Showalter at 120, Brody Strother at 138, Jacob Mahler at 144, Ryder Strother at 150, Sean Heilskov at 175 and Maddon Evans at 215. Only one match went the distance, a major decision by Colin Bird at 165. Taylor Mahler earned a technical fall at 157. The rest of the matches were decided by East Buchanan open weight classes.

Against Independence, each team won seven matches, but the Mustangs capitalized on bonus points. Hampton-Dumont-CAL’s wins by fall included Bird at 175, Brody Robertson at 215, Evans at 285 and Madox Strother at 106.

Against Anamosa, the Bulldogs won six matches, but got six free points due to a forfeit at 120, which created an insurmountable lead in the second-to-last match. The pins were by Charlie Showalter at 132, Jacob Mahler at 138, Taylor Mahler at 157, Bird at 165 and Evans at 215.

With a 3-0 performance, Taylor Mahler recorded his 124th career win, which is tied for the 10th-most in program history.
