The AGWSR basketball teams will return to action in an NICL-West doubleheader Tuesday at Grundy Center.
The AGWSR girls (8-3, 2-1 NICL-W) will search for a bounce-back after a four-game win streak was snapped with Friday’s 39-35 home loss to Jesup. In that game, the Cougars outshot and outrebounded their opponents, but went 6-16 at the free throw line.
Grundy Center (7-5, 3-0 NICL-W) will look to stay in the West lead. In her recent starts, Raelyn Steinmeyer has given the team a boost with her three-point shooting, according to Head Coach Matt Lindeman.
“Raelyn has really stepped in nicely right now and provided that offensive spark and that outside shot that we need, she’s just done a phenomenal job,” Lindeman says. “Tuesday night against Oelwein came out with 20. So you know, anytime we can get multiple people in double digits in the scoring column, that is huge and we’ll take it.”
Steinmeyer’s 14 made three-pointers lead the team.
The AGWSR boys (1-9, 0-3 NICL-W) will go for what would be a major upset.
“It’s one of those things where I don’t think the pressure’s on us,” Head Coach Ryley Schipper says. “I think the pressure can be on them with that undefeated record. But they’re a great basketball team. Coach Thoren’s done a great job of using their length and using their ability to guard to really make it hard on teams. And it’s one of those games where you’ve got to be ready to go. You’ve got to know what you’re good in and be strong with the basketball in all areas in order to give a team like that a run.”
The Cougars found some momentum with their first win of the season Thursday against BCLUW. On Friday, they entered the fourth quarter with a 36-35 lead over Jesup, but were held to just two points in the fourth quarter in a 42-38 loss.
Grundy Center (10-0, 3-0 NICL-W) will look to stay atop the West standings in their first game of 2025 against a division opponent.
The doubleheader will start at 6:15 p.m.
