Across all levels of Iowa government, outstanding debt obligations totaled 21-point-9-billion dollars as of June 30th, 2024.
Overall, this represents a 4-point-49 percent increase over the previous fiscal year. This is lower than the 7-year average of 4-point-51 percent.
Cities possess the largest portion of debt with a combined 8-point-2-billion dollars and the 10 largest cities make up over 35 percent of this category.
Counties had the highest year-over-year percentage increase from fiscal year 2023 to ‘24, with an overall increase of 10-point-88 percent.
