Grundy Center sweeps South Hardin in NICL-West Hoops

The Grundy Center basketball teams earned a home sweep of South Hardin in an NICL-West doubleheader Tuesday. The Spartan girls got past South Hardin 47-46 in overtime and the #6 (2A) Spartan boys won 59-46 to remain undefeated.

In the girls game, it was close throughout, but Grundy Center had the edge for the majority. The Spartans led 20-15 at halftime and 31-25 after the third quarter. Trailing by three, South Hardin’s Grace Eller tied the game with a three-pointer with 11 seconds left, followed by a Grundy Center traveling violation. A Tiger game-winner missed, sending the game to overtime tied at 39. South Hardin’s Ava Salvo hit two free throws for a 46-45 lead with 21 seconds left in overtime, but Grundy Center’s Karlee Lynch hit a floater in the closing seconds to seal the win.

In the boys game, the Spartans gained the early edge and kept it throughout. They turned a 26-16 halftime lead into 46-30 after three, and the Tigers were unable to string together the possessions to come back. Tiernan Vokes led the Spartans with 16 points and Jake Balvanz led the Tigers with 14 points.

Grundy Center will return to action Friday by hosting Columbus Catholic. South Hardin will host Gladbrook-Reinbeck Thursday.
