Former North Iowa State Democratic Representative, 79-year-old John Groninga, died Friday at his home in Mason City.
Groninga grew up in Butler County and graduated from Dumont High School in 1963.
He served in the U-S Army during the Vietnam War and later taught English and reading at Mason City High School from 1970-1980. He was also an English instructor at NIACC from 1985-2010 and served as division chair of the department during part of that time.
Groninga represented Iowa House District #20 and was first elected in 1982, serving until 1992.
During his legislative service, he managed the passage of Iowa’s Resource Enhancement and Protection legislation, and the Industrial Jobs and Training Act.
