The Hampton-Dumont-CAL basketball teams earned a home split with Humboldt in a North Central Conference doubleheader Tuesday. The girls won 41-37 and the boys lost 62-59.
In the girls game, the Bulldogs scored the first 13 points, and didn’t surrender a bucket until the 6:00 mark of the second quarter. The Wildcats found their stride and cut the deficit to 19-11 at halftime. In the second half, the Bulldogs went on a seven-minute scoring drought from the 3:10 mark of the third quarter until the 4:10 mark of the fourth quarter, allowing Humboldt to take a 35-31 lead. With 23 seconds left, MacKenzy Valley hit a three-pointer to go up 39-37, and the Bulldogs sealed the win at the free throw line. Lily Hambly led with 14 points.
In the boys game, the teams went shot for shot for most of the way. Humboldt led 19-17 at the end of the first quarter, and extended it to 36-32 at halftime. In the final minute of the third quarter, Hunter Rieken hit a three-pointer to give the Bulldogs a 51-45 lead. Another Rieken three-pointer gave the Bulldogs a 59-55 lead with 2:45 left, but they were scoreless for the rest of the game. Humboldt sealed the game at the free throw line, and a would-be tying three-pointer fell short at the end of regulation. Brady Harr led with 23 points and Tramaine Horton added 14.
The Bulldogs will return to action Friday by hosting St. Edmond.
