The AGWSR basketball teams will travel to Belmond-Klemme for a non-conference doubleheader Thursday. It’ll be the sixth straight season the teams will have met.
The AGWSR boys (2-14) will go for their second win in the span of a week, having defeated Oelwein Friday. Last time out, they fell at home to South Hardin Tuesday. With a three-game week, Head Coach Ryley Schipper says grasping scouting reports is crucial.

“They’re young, they’ve got a great group of sophomores that have really played well,” Schipper says. “And I knew after we beat them last year that they’re a team that’s gonna be really good over the next three years. It’s short scouting reports, it’s guys being focused when we’re in the gym and when we have the time to talk about those teams, but our guys do a really good job of preparing, we’ll get them ready and have them ready to go.”

Belmond-Klemme (9-8) will look to stay above .500, and is coming off Tuesday’s loss at North Union. Head Coach Justin Meyer says seniors Toby DeBeer and Xavier Mercado will be recognized in what could be their final home game of their careers.

“It’s going to be a good one for us on Senior Night,” Meyer says. “So we get to celebrate those seniors. Just the progress that they made coming in as freshmen to now is quite remarkable. Just didn’t necessarily have the best JJV season when they were freshmen. The fact that they were able to come in and contribute at the JV level, be really competitive at the JV levels is quite a testament to those guys and how hard they work. That should be a fun non-conference game, our last home game of the year, pending what happens in the postseason. Just a celebration of those guys, a celebration of our team.”

The AGWSR girls (11-6) will look to build on a three-game win streak, which included Tuesday’s win over NICL-West rival South Hardin. Belmond-Klemme (7-8) will look to get back on track after a two-game losing streak, which included a down-to-the-wire loss at North Union Tuesday.

The doubleheader will start at 6:15 p.m.
