Tuesday, Hampton-Dumont-CAL senior Isaac Vosburg was announced as one of 150 recipients across the U.S. of a $20,000 Coca-Cola scholarship as part of the Coca-Cola Scholars Program. The scholarship is an achievement-based scholarship awarded to students in their final year of high school.
Vosburg was one of approximately 150,000 seniors across the country to apply for the scholarship and tells RadioOnTheGo News it’s an application process that began last fall.
“You put in some preliminary information, so what are you involved in? What types of hobbies, activities basic information. And after that, they go from this 150,000 down to 1,300. So it’s pretty selective from there. And with those 1,300 semi-finalists, they end up having us write a ton of different essays and just different prompts to answer. But no, once you get those essays and those prompts done, they’re able to form a little bit better picture about you. And so from those 1,300, they end up going down to 250 regional finalists. And so with those 250, they do short interviews. It’s about 20 minutes. It’s online and they’ve got past award recipients. They’re on the call and they just ask you some further questions about the information that you put in your application. They’re looking at your grades, at your study habits. They’re looking for your community involvements. And so from those 250, they end up again with 150 finalists. Really excited about that.”
Since its inception, the foundation has provided over 6,900 Coca-Cola Scholars with more than $84 million in educational support.
Vosburg will now attend the Coca-Cola Scholars Weekend in Atlanta, Georgia in April where he will meet the other 149 award recipients.
Vosburg is the first student from Hampton-Dumont to be awarded the scholarship. Following graduation in May, he plans further his education at Grinnell College to study global developmental studies.
