It’s budget time for governmental entities and school districts.
The Belmond-Klemme School District is one of many that is looking at ways to save funding in light of the recent enrollment numbers released.
Jenn Peter is the Belmond-Klemme Superintendent.
“Well, our served enrollment is down. Our certified enrollment has gone up, but we have more kids that are open enrolling out to either Garner or online school. We’ve got several kids this year that are doing online school as their open enrollment. So our certified is up, but our served is down. And we were down about 39 kids. It’s based on the certified, but we get that funding. And then we have to funnel it to the school that’s actually serving those students. So the money does come to us directly, but then we have to send that money on to the school that the students are being educated at. We get to keep the funding for the students that we serve here and then we send out the rest of the money to the district that serves them.”
Peter tells RadioOnTheGo News that the district will continue to crunch the numbers.
“Think about $8,000 per student, that’s a pretty significant $320,000 change that we’ve got to look at. We’re having to look and see what we can do to shore that up without impacting kids as much as possible. So we’ve been working through that. The good news is, is that our budget has been in a really healthy place. And so it’s not something that we have to do next year. We have to have all of those cuts made, but it is something that we need to consistently be looking at and seeing where we can make those changes.”
Peter is in her first year as superintendent in the Belmond-Klemme School District.
