The Aplington-Parkersburg basketball teams were swept at home by Waverly-Shell Rock in a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday. The girls fell to the #9 (4A) Go-Hawks 50-39 and the #9 (2A) boys fell to #6 (3A) Waverly-Shell Rock 70-64.
In the girls game, it was a low-scoring first quarter, won by the Go-Hawks 9-6. But the Falcons nearly evened the score at halftime, trailing 23-22. But Waverly-Shell Rock made their separation in the third quarter by outscoring the Falcons 18-6 in the period and not allowing a comeback in the fourth quarter. Peyton Klooster led the Falcons with a career-high 26 points. AP has ended the regular season at 14-7 and will return to action Tuesday, February 18 by hosting North Butler in a regional quarterfinal game on 99 The Wave.
In a tightly-contested boys game, the Falcons led 17-13 after the first quarter. Waverly-Shell Rock took a lead with a minute before halftime, and led 30-28 at the break. Leading 32-30 early in the third quarter, the Go-Hawks built a double digit lead by scoring eight straight, but AP closed the gap to three points by the end of the third quarter. A Benny Waller three-pointer tied the game at 53 with five minutes left. But Waverly-Shell Rock scored the next nine during a nearly three-minute AP scoring drought, sealing the game. Waller led with 20 points and Caleb Campbell scored 15. The Falcons will host Hampton-Dumont-CAL in Thursday’s regular season finale on 99 The Wave.
