The Clarksville girls basketball team will play Starmont for the first time in the Bound era, as they host the Stars in a Class 1A Region 5 first round matchup on Thursday, on 99 The Wave.
Clarksville (13-9, 8-4 Iowa Star North) concluded the regular season with a hard fought 36-34 win over Sumner-Frericksburg on Tuesday. The Indians defense challenges opponents with 15 steals per game and by allowing only 40.5 points per game. Paige Kampman continues a stellar junior year with 22 points per game at 38.1 percent from the field. Hannah Wangsness has been a difference maker on boards with a team leading 11 rebounds per game.
Clarksville Head Coach Ross Timmermans on how the Indians defense fuels offense.
“Our girls do a great job of moving, hitting the gaps, hands are up and in the passing lanes. That does fuel some of our offense. We’ve got to continue to do that,” says Timmermans. “We got to continue to work on the offensive end. If we can ever put together a game where we’re clicking on all cylinders on both sides of the floor, that’ll be a fun one for us.”
Starmont (1-19, 0-12 Tri Rivers-West) have lost 19 games in a row since a season opening win over Cedar Valley Christian. The Stars have struggled to score this season averaging 22 points per game and have been plagued by 27 turnovers per game. Natalie Hamlett leads with seven points per game.
Coverage on 99 The Wave begins at 6:40 p.m. followed by the opening tip at 7:00 p.m. in Clarksville.
