The Clarksville girls basketball team led from the opening tip to the final buzzer in a 63-32 Class 1A Region 5 first round win over Starmont on Thursday, as aired on 99 The Wave.

Clarksville sprinted out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter. The Stars went on a 13-7 run to get within a 17-13 deficit. Clarksville led 19-13 at the end of the quarter. Clarksville’s on-ball pressure started to weigh on the Stars in the second, as the Indians went on a 29-8 scoring run to go up 48-21 at the half. Paige Kampman helped the offense take off with 20 first half points. The Indians extended their lead in the third with a 11-4 run to go up 59-25. In the fourth, with the running clock rule in effect, the Indians held the Stars to seven points to put away the double figure win in their final home game.

Head Coach Ross Timmermans on how pressure set the tone and sending the seniors out with a win in their final home game.

“We push the tempo, speed them up in the full court and see if we can continue to speed them up in the half court. Tonight we did that, especially in the second half, I thought we did a much better job of continuing to speed them up and force them to take some tough shots. Then they were out of position to get offensive rebounds,” says Timmermans. “It’s very special. No one can ever take that away from them. It’s so nice to know that when you come back to support your friends or relatives in the future and you walk into this gym; You can say, hey, you know what? We got to win here, our last game ever. That’s something to be very, very proud of.”

Paige Kampman paced the Indians with 26 points including three triples, and Hannah Wangsness added 12 points for the Indians.

Clarksville (14-9) will travel to Dunkerton (14-7) for a Class 1A Region 5 quarterfinal matchup on Tuesday, February 18.
