The AGWSR boys basketball stayed within single digits in the first quarter but #4 (1A) Saint Edmond’s ability to score in a hurry took off from there to win 69-36 in Class 1A District 4 first round matchup on Monday, as aired on 99 The Wave.

Saint Edmond and AGWSR were in a single digit battle in the first, as the Gaels pulled out to a 22-13 lead late in the quarter. Early on in the second quarter, the Gaels led 27-17 and from that point went on a 16-2 scoring run during the remainder of the quarter to go up 43-19 at the half. The Gaels held the Cougars to eight points in the third quarter to increase their lead to 61-27, and set the running clock rule in motion in the fourth to close out the win.

AGWSR Head Coach Ryley Schipper on the persistent effort of the team.

“It was going to be a tall task, but we wanted to come out, we wanted to be ready, and I thought we were. We executed offensively early. Gave up a few offensive rebounds that led to baskets. Couple lazy turnovers that cost us some points, but we were in the game,” says Schipper. “We had opportunities, and they got hot. Against a good team, you got to try different things. We were sitting in the zone and tried to switch back to a man, and they were going to score no matter what we were doing tonight. Effort-wise from our guys, I always get great effort out of my guys. I thought they played hard until the end of the game for me.”

The Cougars were led by Bo Starr with 16 points and Chayton Smith added eight.

AGWSR concludes their season at 4-19.
