The Grundy Center girls basketball team will begin the playoffs by hosting Alburnett in a 2A Region 5 quarterfinal Tuesday.
The Spartans went 14-7 in the regular season with several underclassmen leading the way. Head Coach Matt Lindeman says it’ll be a big moment for many members of the team who will play their first playoff game.
“After your 21 games, we’re not necessarily young anymore, we’ve got experience, but nevertheless, for some of the girls, it’ll be their first tournament game,” Lindeman says. “It’ll be nice to be able to host that at home, but we know we’re gonna face a really good Albrunett team that, maybe their record doesn’t quite show that, similar to ours, but nevertheless, have played some quality teams in their conference, non-conference, you know, from what we’ve seen, obviously film-wise, really impressed with what they do offensively. Their execution, and then how they get after it through their press in their half-court defense. We’ve got a really good challenge ahead. Look forward to it. And if we can do the things that help us make ourselves successful in what we’ve done throughout the year, I like our chances.”
Ava Mundt leads with 12.1 points per game followed by 11.7 per game by Karlee Lynch.
Alburnett went 9-12 in the regular season, which they closed with a 42-38 win over Wilton. No players average in double figure scoring, but Miranda Neighbor leads with 9.2 points per game.
The tipoff will be at 7:00 p.m., and the winner will advance to Friday’s regional semifinal against either Pella Christian or #4 (2A) North Mahaska.
