The Iowa Falls-Alden boys basketball team came up short in a 78-70 overtime loss to Eagle Grove in Monday’s 2A District 4 first round game, as aired on 104.9 KLMJ.

The Eagles jumped out to a 6-0 lead, but the Cadets responded by scoring the next 11, setting the stage for a back-and-forth affair. Eagle Grove led 28-24 at halftime, but IFA scored the first seven points of the third quarter to take the lead. Several lead changes occurred throughout the second half. A crucial play in the fourth quarter happened when Kale Kalous was fouled on a three-point shot while down by three. He sunk all three free throws to tie the game at 66 in the closing seconds of regulation. Then, the teams traded turnovers with less than 10 seconds left to send the game to overtime. In the extra session, the Cadets weren’t able to get buckets nor stops, and the Eagles finished off the playoff win on the road.

“Another game where we scored enough points to win a game, but we just couldn’t get the stops down the stretch,” Head Coach Mike Holm says. “And I can’t fault our kids for playing hard. They busted their rear ends. To get back into it, we were not very good in the first half. And they really battled the second half to get it to overtime. And we just couldn’t get enough stops down at the end.”

Calvin Hutchinson led with 25 points, Kale Kalous added 20 and Carson Allen scored 10.

The Cadets have ended their season at 8-13.
