The Iowa Department of Natural Resources entered into an administrative consent order with Hand Nutrients Management, L-L-C, which is based just west of Eldora. Hand Nutrients Management is a certified manure service. This past October 21st the DNR received the report of a manure tanker from the company that had rolled over one mile east of Buckeye, and about 7-thousand gallons of manure spilled into the south road ditch of 195th Street. The manure flowed through a culvert under the road and then into a small creek that leads to a pond. Hand Nutrients pumped the manure from the north side of the culvert and had dammed the creek to maintain the manure. In addition, the company would flush the area with clean water, pump the creek out, and land apply the contaminated water.
Hand Nutrients reported manure releases in November 2014, October 2021, and in December of 2021.
In the administrative consent order, the company must develop and submit a Standard Operating Procedure for manure application, including but not limited to employee transportation training, plus pay an administrative penalty of 25-hundred dollars.
