This week is Read Across America Week.

Each day has had a theme as a way to encourage more reading among students.

Several people, including members of the RadioOnTheGo staff, have been reading to students this week in the Hampton-Dumont Elementary Schools.

H-D Elementary School Principal Beth Frenchick tells RadioOnTheGo News how important reading is in today’s world.

“It is so important that our children learn how to read and understand their language. We’re fortunate to have students who are bilingual, so really emphasizing the importance of being bilingual and how important it is for them to grow up knowing both English and Spanish, which is amazing. Reading impacts all parts of our lives. As adults, we use it each day in our work and, you know, in anything they do in school, reading is really important. We just emphasize it each and every day.”

She says the teaching staff is always willing to try different ideas to help students read.

“Been doing a lot of work on our literacy instruction here. Our classroom teachers are taking what’s called letters training and so that’s really emphasizing the science of reading and how to teach that. Also, I’m in UFLY which works a lot with phonics and we’re seeing some great progress in our students. Any opportunity that we can have to have them read and you know fall in love with reading and find a style or a genre of book that they really enjoy, we will take that opportunity. So we really jumped on this.”

Read Across America Week began Sunday, the same day as the birthday of Dr. Seuss.
