The West Fork girls basketball team reached a regional final and was crowned Top of Iowa Conference-East champions for the second time in the last three seasons, as they took flight to a 20-4 finish.
The Warhawks were led by eight seniors, including Brylie Hubka, Nehir Kanat, Tarah Ruckdashel, Ava Huff, Jana Harms, Keara Wood, Leah Weaver and Karma McMorris.
Head Coach Rodney Huber on the final huddle with seniors and the difference they made.
“I’m still a little emotional about it, honestly, thinking about the seniors, how they’ve matured and how far they’ve come as players was really awesome. How they came together. We had high expectations, we always do, because we’ve kind of established a certain level of play now, but we didn’t really know how high the ceiling was,” says Huber. “I think this team really got to where we wanted them to. It was a very emotional kind of a goodbye in a way, thanking them for all the time they put into the program.”
Four seniors were all-conference honorees, including Weaver, Kanat, McMorris and Hubka. Weaver led the team in points per game (17.6) and assists per game (4). Kanat led the team in three pointers made with 31. McMorris was second in the team in steals with 75 on the season. Hubka led the team with 129 rebounds.
Huber on a trio ready to step up for next year’s squad.
“We had three really good freshmen. Zada Huff, Ava Huff’s younger sister, was getting a lot of time at the end of the year and was shooting really well from three. I think she led our team in three-point percentage. Then Mya Marzen and Aizley Winfrey, they can shoot the ball. They might be the best trio of incoming freshmen as far as shooting goes, just pure shooting. I think they see what this group did and I think they’re motivated. I’ve already heard some of them are maybe going to be doing some AAU things. They worked hard in the summer. I think those three will be a big part of our team next year.”
The Warhawks are projected to return seven players next season.
