The Belmond-Klemme girls basketball team concluded their second winning season in a row at 12-11 following a regional quarterfinal loss to #14 (2A) West Fork. A few of the Broncos highlight wins were first time wins over Class 3A’s Humboldt and Class 4A’s Webster City in non-conference action.

The Broncos rallied around five seniors, including Adasyn Lamb, Quinn Gabrielson, Caylee Kuhlers, Shaylee Aguilera and Carlee Kuhlers.

Head Coach James Severson on the seniors’ journey and the example they set.

“This senior class has been together all the way since third grade. They’ve gone back and forth and done a lot of great things. I think there’s a lot of younger girls that look up to them, their leadership and how they play the game,” says Severson. “They’ll show on the floor in the next couple of years what those girls brought to the floor. Their impact will be lasting, that is for sure.”

Lamb set four new career school records in points (1,459), assists (304), triples (145) and free throws (320). Caylee Kuhlers set a new school record in career blocks (217). Gabrielson finished with 935 career points, as the team’s second leading scorer over the last three seasons.

Severson on identifying next scorers and key returners.

“Re-engaging what that’s gonna look like for some of our girls that are gonna take on a new role. Maybe they were role players this season or in the past, but we’ll maybe have to step up next summer or throughout the next season and become scorers. For us its gonna be one of the bigger elements that we’re gonna have to face. Kaylen Morris, Lila Swenson, Kendra Huedepohl are gonna be major factors for us next year as they become seniors. Nevi McMurray as a sophomore coming in as a junior is gonna be big. Those four together are going to be a huge part of what we do next year, how we attack things and defensively. We’ll have to find some more role players, but those four are going to be really big for us.”

Belmond-Klemme is projected to return seven players next season.
