Today the Franklin County Board of Supervisors discussed legislation that made it through the first funnel deadline at the statehouse in Des Moines.

Franklin County Auditor Katy Flint told the board that the statewide auditor’s association has been lobbying for legislative changes.

“Couple things that the auditors wanted in regards to elections was we wanted the ability to mail absentee ballots five at least five days before you can start in person absentee voting and they still don’t want to hear anything about it. But on the good side they did not put in the three envelope system for absentee voting which means we don’t all have to buy more envelopes.”

Flint says it’s still very early in the process to find out more information about proposed legislation that could greatly change the property tax system in Iowa.

“How exactly financially it’s going to look for all of us other than we know it’s probably gonna be tight the next couple years. We haven’t gotten into doing the math. We have discussed Department of Management. When House File 718 was put into place, we worked with them. They kind of came up with a spreadsheet basically that counties could plug in their numbers and see exactly how it would financially impact them.”

Some of the key Republican lawmakers say this would be the biggest property tax overhaul in Iowa since 1977.
