The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows girls track and field team has been limited on practices due to toss-up weather so far this spring.

Head Coach Monty Harker on necessities to be ready for the outdoor season.

“It’s really been hit or miss as far as the weather down here so far this year. That’s been a little frustrating. They are still a long ways from being in shape because of what we’ve been able to do. We need to be able to get some practices in,” says Harker. “One of two things need to happen. We need to have some ability to run, sprint and get our distances in to help us get in shape. Then the next thing is for the skills events, your hurdles, your field events and block starts. They are gonna need some time to spend on honing their craft, so to say, as far as their techniques. That’s really what we need to get done in a short amount of time, it is almost two things at once as far as getting in shape and trying to get to the fundamentals on certain events.”

The Cowgirls return three seniors with multiple years of varsity experience including Makayla Beisel, Harley Charlson and Kennedy Jackson.

Harker on the top events for Beisel, Charlson and Jackson and other events to fill.

“MaKayla, could pretty much if she wants to, qualify hopefully in whatever events she runs in. Right now she’s been, high jumping, long jumping, the 100 hurdles, 400 hurdles have been her main four events, but this year we might try a little bit something different. Kennedy Jackson and Harley Charlson are our other two seniors out all four years. Kennedy does good in our sprints and Harley’s our fastest 800 runner. We’d like to try and put together some sort of shuttle hurdle. It seems like the last few years I’ve been limited on numbers to the point where we barely put together any relays. We’ll definitely have enough for some relays. It will be interesting to see who are the top throwers out of the seven. There’s going to be some that are going to be able to throw in meets and some that won’t.”

Beisel was a 2024 state qualifier in the high jump placing 17th. At the North Iowa Indoor Championships on Thursday, Beisel had a season best jump of 5-02 for second place in high jump, Charlson ran a season-best 3:02.05 in the 800m and Jackson ran a season-best 31.17 in the 200m.

The Cowgirls first outdoor meet is scheduled for April 10 at Eagle Grove.
