The Wolverines dictated the flow of the game, especially in the first half. Ruby Varney got the scoring started with the first goal of the season less than seven minutes in. Playing most of the first half on their offensive half of the field, DNH got on the board again with a Payton Foster goal midway through the half. In the closing seconds of the half, the Wolverines added some cushion with another goal by Foster.
The Rebels made some offensive adjustments while applying more defensive pressure in the second half, but it didn’t help their cause on the scoreboard. Varney added her second goal with 11 minutes left in regulation, and DNH cruised to the season-opening win.
“It was a fairly good start to our season,” Head Coach Emma Eden says. “We had a lot of girls contribute to the success of tonight. We had a lot of good combinations up top with returners and upcoming new freshmen in there. We did a good job of holding our midfield. So our midfield at our sixes did a nice job of commanding that. Our defensive line did a fantastic job of locking that down. And we had our goalkeeper in the net,Jaden, just being a wall there.”
In her first career start at the goalie position, Jaden Zedeker recorded a shutout with the aid of an impressive team defensive effort.
DNH (1-0) will return to action Friday at Union.
