Monday, Franklin County Sheriff Aaron Dodd gave an update on his department to the board of supervisors.

Dodd told the board that because of an increase in inmate medical expenses, he requested additional funds.

“Inmate medical costs than we had last year was a little over the year before I think was right. I can’t remember the way it was, but every once in you’ll hit a year where it’s just excessive and that is where we’re at this year. So I put in a request for an amendment amount of 25,000. So big money, but we’re in the red. You know that line item’s in the red, a total cost of about 36,000 right now. So increase that budget line to 40,000 for this past year.”

Dodd says a nurse must contact him first before any final decisions are made on medical testing.

“Serious misdemeanor, but they’ve sat in there for, yeah, they just can’t bond out on a small bond and then you get it and there was one day it was serious misdemeanor offense and we got socked with like a $9,000 bill on that one person. So that bites.”

Franklin County sends its inmates first to Hardin County, and if Hardin is full, the inmates are sent to the Bremer County Jail.
