The Grundy Center track & field teams each won team titles at Tuesday’s Spartan Early Bird Coed which they hosted. In the girls team standings, the Spartans had 172 points, Aplington-Parkersburg was second and AGWSR was fifth. In the boys standings, Grundy Center had 144.5 points, Aplington-Parkersburg was third and AGWSR was seventh.
Grundy Center’s Brayden Wallis was the champion in the 400-meter dash in 52.38, and was also part of the winning 4×400 team in 3:31.73.
“It was alright, a little bit cold outside but conditions are conditions, you just gotta push through it,” Wallis says. “Try to get out as fast as you can and just trust in the training that you put in throughout the season. Even though we got a late start, we might not be as in shape as some other competitors out there, but you’ve just got to push through it and do your best. As far as relays go, we’re really hoping to make it to Drake in the 4×4 this year. I think that’d be a great accomplishment for the team. And then looking further down the road, get to state in a few events and maybe even win some events such as the 4×4.”

Competing for the first time since winning last year’s Class 2A state title, the Aplington-Parkersburg girls shuttle hurdle relay team had a first place finish in 1:14.17. Junior Ava Eddy says they’re running just as fast as they did in early April last year.
“Definitely a lot of room for improvement,” Eddy says. “I was telling them earlier because some of them were worried about their steps and stuff, but this is what we were at this time last year. I think that gives us a lot of motivation, and I think at this point it’s trust the process and continue with reps, like keep practicing. And then yeah, I think we can show a lot of improvement in these next couple meets even.”
