The Hampton-Dumont-CAL girls track & field team will host the Lady Bulldog Invitational Thursday. Several teams from many area conferences will attend. Last time out, the Bulldogs placed seventh at Tuesday’s Clear Lake Girls Invitational. One of the standouts, according to Head Coach Nikki Donnenwerth, has been senior Lily Hambly, who’s competing in the 400 hurdles for the first time this season.
“We’ll rebuild with those hurdle events,” Donnenwerth says. “But Lily Hambly continues to get stronger every year. Her sprint speed improves every single year with that strength. She’s been a hurdler for us in the shuttle hurdle. You could see her do some open hurdle races this year. She’s a quarter-miler for us. She qualified for the state meet in the 400 last year, and she’s for sure our best 400 runner. We might throw in some hurdles in those quarter miles, and we really think that could be her best race is the 400 hurdles.”
The meet will start at 4:30.
The boys track & field team will join several schools from the North Central and Top of Iowa Conferences at the Cowboy Relays at Clarion-Goldfield-Dows. In their last meet, they placed sixth at Gilbert Tuesday. The meet will start at 4:30.
The soccer teams will both be at Webster City for a conference doubleheader. The girls snapped a 27-game losing streak with Monday’s 0-0 tie with Wright County. Head Coach Ben Schlachter.
“We’ll have a full squad finally,” Schlachter says. “We’ll go over there with our full squad and see what we can do. Last year we took a pretty big step forward on our defensive side of the ball. And this year I feel like the girls have progressively started to get better on offense. If we can put together a full game, we might be able to sneak out of there with one. You just never know.”
The boys game will be a battle of undefeated teams. The doubleheader will start at 5:30.
The tennis teams will look to bounce back from Tuesday’s losses to Iowa Falls-Alden when they take on Clear Lake at 4:30. The girls will be at home and the boys will be on the road.
