The Wright County girls soccer team held its ground defensively from start to finish and controlled time of possession in the second half to work a scoreless tie against Charles City on Thursday, as aired on 104.9 KLMJ. It was Wright County’s second match to end in a tie this week and third of the season.

Head Coach Miriam Meinke on strides the team has made and their attitude in hunt for first win.

“These girls showed up, they did exactly what I asked them to at practice and here at the field. These girls have worked so hard and we wanted to win. At the end of the day, they learned how to have fun on the field, they used all the practices that we had to work on the field and they learned how to handle the ball way better than when we did at the beginning of the season,” says Meinke. “That’s one of the the hardest things. I think my team, especially the girls that have played before, the positive that I get from them is that a tie is better than a loss.”

Wright County had seven shots on goal and Charles City had six in the match. Wright County handed the Comets only their second scoreless outing of the season and the first since their season opener.

Senior Captain Ella Negrete on the team’s readiness for the match and controlling time of possession.

“We knew it was going to be a very defense heavy game. We came out, we showed them how we were and we weren’t going to roll over for them to walk all over us. Honestly, we showed up tonight and they weren’t expecting it,” says Negrete. “We’ve never been a team to stay on offense for too long. Honestly, it was like a shock to me that we were down there for longer than five minutes. As a mid, you have a lot of responsibility, defense, offense, you kind of control the whole thing. Keeping it down there was hard.”

Wright County (0-3-3) returns to action at Clear Lake on Monday.
