The Aplington-Parkersburg girls basketball team will go for a road upset in Friday’s 2A Region 8 semifinal at #7 (2A) Denver on 99 The Wave. The Cyclones swept the regular season series.
The Falcons (15-7) began the playoffs with Tuesday’s 70-33 home win over North Butler, where the result was never in question after a strong start. Having shot 41 percent with only 10 turnovers committed, the Falcons will look to continue that trend and put together their most crisp performance of the season. Head Coach Brady Driscol says it’s a heated series with Denver.
“Even going back to two of our assistants, Kaitlin and Ellie, that was their senior year, we had that substate game against Denver and fell short there, I think a single digit loss,” Driscol says. “And they want it just as much as the girls want it. So they’re going to do everything they can. We’re going to do everything we can to get them ready for that one. They beat us pretty good at home. And I think we took that one pretty hard. So knowing that we were probably going to get a third chance at them and that third chance is on Friday, they’ll be ready to roll.”
The Cyclones (21-2) had no problems in Tuesday’s 58-18 home win over South Winneshiek, where they held their opponent scoreless in the first quarter. The Falcons will look to guard a trio of effective scorers, led by Mylee Thurm’s 11.6 points per game.
The Cyclones won by 32 on the road and two at home in the regular season.
Pregame coverage will start at 6:40 p.m., followed by the tipoff at 7:00. The winner will advance to Wednesday’s regional final against either MFL MarMac or #8 (2A) Maquoketa Valley.
