The Aplington-Parkersburg girls and AP/DNH boys soccer teams split with GC-GR in their season openers Thursday. In Aplington, the Falcon girls won 2-0 as aired on 99 The Wave. In Reinbeck, the United lost 3-1.
In the girls game, the Falcons scored quickly with a goal by Kiara Morris within the game’s first two minutes. Near the 30-minute mark of the second half, Rebel goalkeeper Jaden Hansen was caught out of position after making a save, and Ciara Troyna tapped the ball into the goal from short range to double the Falcon lead. GC-GR had several scoring opportunities, but Falcon goalkeeper Emma Haan recorded 12 saves to earn the shutout. Aplington-Parkersburg is 1-0 and will be at Hudson Monday. GC-GR is 0-1 and will host Marshalltown Monday.
In the boys game, the United got on the board first with a goal by Walker Weedman near the 27-minute mark of the first half. 13 minutes later, the Rebels tied the game with a goal by Isaac Clark, and it was tied 1-1 at halftime. In the second half, GC-GR’s Treyvon Herron scored twice to finish the scoring, and the Rebels secured the win. GC-GR is 1-0 and will return to action Monday, April 8 by hosting Columbus Catholic. The 0-1 United will return to action Monday, April 1 by hosting Hudson, a game that’ll air on 99 The Wave.
