The Cougar boys and girls golf teams will join Gladbrook-Reinbeck at triangulars hosted by BCLUW. After several postponements, it’ll be the season opener for both teams. The boys have four returners from last year’s state qualifying team. Head Coach Ryley Schipper expects junior Easton Kerns, senior Gabe Nederhoff and senior Eli Kuper to lead the way.
“Eli was a part of the state title team back in 21,” Schipper says. “So he really knows what it takes to be able to get back. He’s been there twice and knows what it’s gonna take. Gabe didn’t play as a freshman, came out as a sophomore, and has really, really gotten better every single year. He’s put a lot of time in, not just during the year, but even in the off season going and hitting and really refining things for himself. Easton really puts in a ton of time, works on a swing, constantly trying to get the ins and outs and doesn’t hit it a long ways, but is very consistent in what he does. And those three are probably going to be our top three scorers, I would say, on a nightly basis.”
Schipper says the Cougars will face quality competition early in the season.
“I think it’s easy to get wrapped up in how well you play on your own course, but you play it all the time,” Schipper says. “So you know the ins and outs of the course, but what can you do on another course? What do we have to work on when we’re on another course, as opposed to what you know you can do on our course? And so we’re gonna play some good talent early on. We get to see AP early, we get to see Grundy early, we get to see BCLUW early, and you get to see where you stack up.”
The boys will compete at Oakwood Golf Course in Conrad and the girls will compete at South Hardin Recreation Area in Union. Both meets will start at 4:15 p.m.
