The Iowa Legislature could adjourn by Saturday.

Iowa Republican State Senator Dennis Guth of Klemme tells Radio on the Go News that he is trying to push his leadership to do more with carbon capture pipelines.

Guth #1 28 secs oc: “happen this year”

“Abraham Lincoln had a quote that I can’t tell you perfectly off the top of my head, but he said that the shepherd goes, saves the lamb from the wolf, and he’s praised by the lamb for protecting his freedom. But the wolf complains that his freedom has been infringed. What we really need here is a definition of freedom that everybody can agree to. And I think that applies to this case, is we don’t have landowners’ property rights really defined, protected in a way that everybody understands. I would really like to see that happen this year.”

Guth was asked what grade he would give the legislative session up to this point.

Guth #2 22 secs oc: “in my opinion”

“You say in one grade for the whole session, that’s really quite a broad spectrum here. There’s been some really good things that happened this year. We were able to pass the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which I’ve worked on for seven and a half years, so I’m really excited about that. We’ve gotten nothing through the Senate on the pipeline issue, and so I’m very discouraged about that. And you average it all together, and I think we’re going to have a C-plus, in my opinion.”

This week lawmakers will be focused on finalizing appropriation bills that will fund the state government in the next fiscal year.
