The Grundy Center girls track & field team will host a mix of NICL and non-conference opponents at the Spartan Girls Invite Thursday. The Spartans have had a remarkable season, winning each of the four outdoor meets in which they’ve competed and team scores have been kept. Sophomore Grace Storjohann competes in the 1500, 800, long jump and 4×800, and says the roster size has allowed flexibility to create winning lineups.
“Last year, we got beat by the same team or two, every single meet,” Storjohann says. “And it beats you down after a while when you stay close to the point total and you barely lose or you lose by a lot sometimes. And this year we finally have a large number of girls, which always helps. And we have so much potential that hasn’t been seen in a very long time, I don’t think, by our girls track program. So it’s just great to have us all together for this year. I know we have a lot of great seniors, a lot of great freshmen, a lot in between, but this is definitely our year.”
The meet will start at 4:30 p.m.
The boys track & field team is coming off a second place finish at Dike-New Hartford Monday, and will travel to Denver, the team that topped the Spartans in that meet. It was the first time in the outdoor season the Spartans didn’t place first. They’ll join teams from the NICL, WaMaC, Northeast Iowa and Iowa Star conferences. It’ll start at 4:30.
At 1-3, the girls tennis team will play at 5-0 Dike-New Hartford at 4:15.
The undefeated boys golf team will look to continue its hot streak. They’ll host Oelwein at 4:15 p.m. at Town & Country Golf Club.
