Hampton-Dumont-CAL junior Charlee Morton further cemented her legacy in the throwing circle, as she surpassed the rest of the Class 3A field to be crowned with back to back state titles in the discus and shot put.

Morton won the discus title on her first throw of the finals, scaling 140-09 for a state meet PR. She won the title in 2023 with a throw of 137-06.

Morton says a steady increase in distance helped her achieve the top throw, and hopes to further experience this summer.

“I thought it went really well, I started off really strong, which I was glad with,” says Morton. “Even just increasing by a little bit, I think that really helped me to get that 140. I was glad to throw 140 here again, and I did it at Drake. I was hoping for a PR, but I got more experience and hoping to get a PR in the summer.”

Morton had the opportunity to compete in discus competition with fellow Bulldog Freshman Maren Subbert who placed 10th with a throw of 110-06. Morton says Subbert is a valuable asset and it was great to support one another at state.

“It’s nice to have her around, being able to help each other, bounce ideas off of each other and knowing that she was there to support me the whole time. I was there to support her the whole time during the throws today. It just feels really great to know that I have another teammate who can do amazing things.”

Morton won the shot put on her second to last throw of the finals, crossing to 41-02. She won the event in 2023 with a throw of 42-05.25.

Morton says shoring up on the little things will be part of preparation for next season.

“Definitely the torque is the main thing, I definitely do not have that down right now. I’m glad there’s more things I know that I need to work on for next year because we still got one more year. I think if I just perfect those little things, I definitely will get my goal, hopefully that will happen this summer and I can keep on increasing next year.”

Morton takes the field this summer with HD-CAL softball to close out her junior year.
