The Dike-New Hartford summer sports teams split at home with Wapsie Valley Wednesday in NICL crossover action. The softball team won 10-9 and the baseball team lost 17-7 in six innings.
In a back and forth softball game, there were several lead changes. The Wolverines led 2-1 after one and scored four in the second to take a 6-4 lead. The Warriors briefly led 7-6 before the Wolverines tied the game in the bottom of the third. In the fifth inning, tied 9-9, Macy Mracek hit a sacrifice fly to score the game’s final run, and the Wolverine defense kept Wapsie off the board the rest of the way. Payton Nolan went 3-for-3 with three runs scored. DNH (10-5, 5-1 NICL-C) will play a doubleheader at Hudson Thursday. Two wins would put the Wolverines in first place in the Central standings.
In the baseball game, Wapsie Valley was on fire with 12 runs in the top of the first inning. The Wolverines scored once each in the second and third, followed by two in the fourth and three in the fifth to cut the deficit to six. But the Warriors added four more in the sixth to end the game early. DNH (9-4, 5-2 NICL-C) will play a single game at Hudson Thursday at 7:00 p.m.
