The Dike-New Hartford softball team was unable to match Hudson’s offensive output, falling 7-3 in a 2A regional semifinal Friday, as aired on 99 The Wave.
The Wolverines scored first when Karsyn Nolan stole home in the top of the first. But Hudson answered with one in the bottom of the first and three in the second, including a two-run homer by Addie Rhoades. DNH cut the deficit to 4-2 when Kailyn Meester drove in a run in the third, but Hudson answered with two more in the fourth and one in the fifth. Hanna Steffen hit a solo home run in the fifth, but the Wolverines got no closer. Interim coach Rhandi Oelmann says the offense didn’t translate to success. The Wolverines outhit the Pirates, but stranded nine baserunners.
“We had a couple errors that hurt us more than you would think that they would have, so that didn’t help,” Oelmann says. “And then we left way too many runners and we had a couple things offensively happen that don’t help either. I felt like we really came out ready to go. The girls were hitting the ball really well. They were ready to go, all that kind of stuff. And just wasn’t our night. Hudson’s a great team, and they had a couple of momentum changes. Rhoades hitting that bomb. That really changed momentum of where things were going. They scratch a couple more across and it’s just hard to come back in a regional game like this.”
Meester led with three hits. Steffen and Madde Buskohl each had two. Faith Gray pitched the complete game with no strikeouts, four walks and 10 hits.
DNH’s season ends at 20-10.
