The West Fork baseball team held a 2-0 shutout through the first four innings and then Newman Catholic mounted the comeback with a four run fifth and held on for a 4-2 victory in a Class 1A District 5 final, as aired on 104.9 KLMJ on Saturday.

West Fork scored single tallies in the first and second innings on RBI doubles by Edison Maske and Trevor Despenas. The Warhawks defense limited the Knights to only one base runner in each of the first four innings. In the fifth inning, Newman adjusted its approach at the plate and batted around, scoring four runs on five hits to take a 4-2 advantage. The Knights limited the Warhawks traffic on the bases to only two runners over the final two innings to advance.

West Fork Head Coach Kayden Ames says Edison Maske pitched a quality outing and the goal next year is to compete atop the conference.

“Eddie threw a great game, which I expected, he comes in, he hits spots, and he has a weird arm angle, so he’s kind of hard to hit,” says Ames. “It’s Newman, we knew that two runs wasn’t going to win the game, and they had their inning. I’m just overall really proud of the guys. We made the jump this year that we wanted to make, but the next jump’s harder competing at the top of the conference, and that’s what we’re looking to do next year.”

The Warhawks were led by Edison Maske and Trevor Despenas with an RBI apiece. Maske on the mound worked five innings allowing four earned runs with one strikeout in his final high school start.

West Fork closes the year at 12-14 overall.
