We lost a Legend yesterday. My first introduction to James Earl Jones was as the deep and iconic voice of the Star Wars villain Darth Vader. Darth Vader was such and iconic character that needed 4 actors to bring him to life and James was the voice. While many may know him best as the voice of Vader, he’s had many other great roles including Thulsa Doom in Conan the Barbarian with Arnold Schwarzenegger, Eddie Murphy’s father King Jaffe Joffer in Coming to America, Terence Mann in the iconic Iowa film Field of Dreams, Mr. Mertle in The Sandlot, and just as iconic in his voicework he is Mufasa in The Lion King as well as many many other films and tv roles. One of my favorite episodes of the series The Big Bang Theory in 2014 where he played himself along side Carrie Fisher who played herself in the episode but years earlier had played his daughter Princess Leia in the Star Wars films. Did you know that it was when they were filming that episode of The Big Bang Theory that they met each other for the first time in person? I couldn’t believe It took them almost 40 years to meet in person despite playing major characters that spoke to each other in the Star Wars films, however it makes perfect sense that they wouldn’t have met on the set of Star Wars as James would only be in to do voice work after all the filming was complete but it still surprised me it took that long. Its sad another film legend has passed and I’m reminded of a quote from Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, “We seem to have reached the age where life stops giving us things and starts taking them away”. Now, life hasn’t stopped giving me things completely, in the last few years its given me high blood pressure LOL, seriously though I have a lot of good things in life but it is still sad that a lot of people (and things) I have enjoyed over my life are now passing away because we’ll never have anything new from them, however we do have some of the best memories. R.I.P. James Earl Jones
