The West Fork girls basketball team will tip off their season with a Top of Iowa crossover matchup hosting North Iowa on Tuesday.
West Fork went 13-10 last season. The Warhawks ranked second in Top of Iowa-East steals per game (14.9) and effective field goal percentage (38%) last season. The Warhawks return leading scorer Leah Weaver who averaged 20.7 points per game, and also led the team with 112 steals last season. Karma McMorris returns as the second leading scorer with nine points per game and was the top rebounder with 111 boards last season.
West Fork Head Coach Rodney Huber on not overlooking the Bison in opener.
“We played this game the last, I think, two or three years now, so we’re familiar with kind of what they do. They played a 3-2 zone and they had a really talented post player who I think has since graduated. They made it tough on us last year, we kind of got shocked by them a little bit. They played us to a one point game,” says Huber. “You can’t overlook teams, especially early on in the season like this. You’re going to be rusty, it’s the first live game. We have to make sure that we’re prepared for as much as possible in case they throw something that we haven’t seen or haven’t experienced from them. I like our chances. Hopefully we can come out and get an early win and a confidence builder.”
North Iowa went 8-15 last season and began their season on Monday by hosting Northwood-Kensett.
The Warhawks won a thriller 50-49 in last year’s meeting at Buffalo Center.
Action begins at 6:15 p.m. in Sheffield.
