Butler Supervisors reminded about proposed legislation

Tuesday the Butler County Board of Supervisors received information on a modernization initiative concerning Iowa Land Records from county recorder Janice Jacobs.

Jacobs reminded the Butler supervisors that legislation will be introduced in the next session of the Iowa Legislature in January.

Jacobs tells RadioOnTheGo News that Iowa’s recording fees are currently the lowest in the central United States and revenue from recording fluctuates with the real estate economy.  Iowa has not updated recording fees since 1985, and recent inflation has had a real effect on the cost of local recording and ILR services.

This proposed fee increase is shifting the recording fee to like a user fee, instead of county property taxes paying.  This will help the general fund of the county.

Jacobs adds that with the property tax reform, the legislators have indirectly instructed the counties to try and find ways to increase their general fund.
