The #14 (2A) Hampton-Dumont-CAL boys wrestling team went 1-1, #17 (2A) Clarion-Goldfield-Dows went 2-0 and Webster City went 0-2 at Thursday’s North Central Conference triangular hosted by the Cowboys, as aired on 104.9 KLMJ.
In the opener, the Bulldogs beat Webster City 50-20. The Bulldogs got four wins by fall, including by Jaymes Stevens at 144, Taylor Mahler at 157, William Vosburg at 120, and Luke Showalter at 126. Wins by technical fall included Colin Bird at 165, Madox Strother at 106, Jacob Mahler at 132 and Charlie Showalter at 138, capping off a dominant win.
The Cowboys narrowly defeated the Bulldogs in the second dual, 35-34. Hampton-Dumont-CAL won four of the first five matches for a 20-3 lead. Clarion-Goldfield-Dows stormed back with pins by Charlie Campbell at 190, JT Kelso at 285 and Linden Phetxoumphone at 132. Major decisions by Paxton Redenius at 113 and Adrian Phetxoumphone at 132 helped the Cowboys increase their lead.
“We just got to finish that there,” Hampton-Dumont-CAL coach Patrick Hansen says. “And I mean, kudos to the Clarion-Goldfield-Dows. I mean, they’re coached well. They are good wrestlers. They brought it tonight. Next time we’ll come and get them. I think back to it, and we’re going to move our weights around a little bit. We’re going to be a little tougher after Christmas. It’s a marathon, not a sprint. And it’s going to be what we do after this. We got Humboldt next week. If we can go get one of those, keep us in the dual ranking. It’s about how good you are in January and February. This is another learning experience. Our kids are built by the fire, and we’re gonna keep throwing them into it.”
The Cowboys defeated Webster City 52-27 in the final dual of the night. The Cowboys earned six pins, including by Caleb Seaba at 165, Kelso at 285, Cole Wibholm at 106, Linden Phetxoumphone at 120, Ryan Hartwig at 126 and Colin Sesker at 144.
Hampton-Dumont-CAL will return to action at a tournament at Emmetsburg Saturday. Clarion-Goldfield-Dows will be at Saturday’s Keith Vry Invitational at AP/GC.
