The Butler County Conservation Board is hosting a few events as the official start to winter draws closer. One of the events planned this winter is a firewood cutting day on Saturday, December 21st at the nature center and the conservation shop area.
Butler County Naturalist Annette Wittrock says the conservation board has been busy cutting down ash trees infected by the emerald ash borer and says anyone who would like firewood from those downed trees can take advantage of the cutting day.
“For those that want to just have larger logs loaded on a trailer to take home and work with, they can go to the Butler County Conservation Board shop area. We’ll have a staff member there with our skid loader to load the logs onto trailers for them. If you wanna cut firewood by hand, we will have those people meet up near the nature center. We have some areas along our trails in the driveway that you’ll be able to cut some firewood by hand up there. You can’t bring a tractor or a skid loader. You can only cut down trees that we have provided. Cutting other trees will subject you to fines. Vehicles are allowed off the roads and trails only with the permission of our staff. We ask that you bring your own safety gear and chainsaw, of course.”
Wittrock says besides the firewood cutting day, the board has other events planned this winter.
“We’re going to be doing some birdhouse building and have the nature center open leading up to the new year. And we’re getting ready for our February night ski event too. Fingers crossed that we actually get snow this year and it’s not brutally cold.”
The firewood cutting day will be held Saturday, December 21st from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. near Clarksville.
