The AGWSR basketball teams will look for their first NICL-West wins of the season when they host East Marshall for a doubleheader Tuesday.
The girls (4-2, 0-1 NICL-W) have lost consecutive games after a 4-0 start. They’ll search for a bounce back from Friday’s 71-27 loss at #15 (1A) Gladbrook-Reinbeck, where they were held to just six points in the second half.
East Marshall (2-5, 0-1 NICL-W) has not been competitive in their recent losses, including a 59-22 loss at home to BCLUW Friday. Ashtyn Wheater leads with 5.6 points per game.
The AGWSR boys (0-4, 0-1 NICL-W) were defeated 63-29 at Gladbrook-Reinbeck in Friday’s West opener. Head Coach Ryley Schipper says they’ll need to be ready for the speed of their opponent and try to control the pace to limit turnovers.
“They want to play fast, they want to turn you over,” Schipper says. “They want to take as many possessions as they can and play really, really fast. You got to try not to play into that. Obviously you want to take advantage of opportunities when you get them, you know, to run a little bit with them. But I think the faster you play with them, the harder it becomes. I like our depth, but again, it’s one of those things where you don’t want to have to go any deeper than you need to. If you can get the game at your pace against East Marshall, I think it benefits you, so we’ll have to get stronger with the basketball. I think we turned it over too many times against Gladbrook-Reinbeck, against the man. It comes down to guys just being strong and beating it. And we’ll see the same thing with East Marshall.”
The Mustangs (0-4, 0-1 NICL-W) are winless, but have competed well, with the largest margin of defeat being 10 points against Lynnville-Sully. Four players average in double figures, led by Blake Neuroth with 13.5 points per game.
The tipoff will be at 6:15 p.m.
