The Hampton-Dumont-CAL basketball teams split a rare non-conference doubleheader against different schools at home Tuesday. The #12 (3A) girls beat Crestwood 39-38 in overtime and the boys lost to Charles City 62-55.
In the girls game, the teams battled to a 14-14 tie after a low-scoring first half. The Cadets found their stride by outscoring the Bulldogs 12-3 for a 26-17 lead entering the fourth. Hampton-Dumont-CAL fought back to tie the game at 33, and a game-winner by Crestwood missed to send the game to overtime. Tied at 38 in the final seconds, MacKenzy Valley was fouled on a shot attempt, and made her second free throw to take the lead for good and seal the win.
In the boys game, the teams traded scoring runs throughout the first half. Hampton-Dumont-CAL led 20-17 after the first quarter, and Charles City led 34-33 at halftime. The Bulldogs hit a cold spell with just six points scored in the third quarter to allow the Comets to create separation. Charles City led by as many as 10 in the fourth quarter on their way to the win.
The girls (11-1) will host #14 (2A) Pocahontas Area and the boys (3-7) will host Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Thursday.
