Three Hampton-Dumont-CAL winter sports teams will be in action Thursday.

The girls basketball team will host a non-conference game against #14 (2A) Pocahontas Area. The #12 (3A) Bulldogs (11-1) have continued to find ways to win, including Tuesday’s 39-38 overtime win over Crestwood, where they erased a nine-point deficit. Pocahontas Area (8-2) has lost two straight against #5 (3A) Spirit Lake and #3 (1A) Newell-Fonda. Action will start at 6:15 p.m.

The boys basketball team will host Clarion-Goldfield-Dows for a North Central Conference game, the first meeting of the season. The Bulldogs (3-7) have lost consecutive games to Algona and Charles City, which snapped a two-game win streak to begin January.

“They have good size and length as well,” Head Coach Brian Niesen says. “That’s another huge game for us. And I believe they’ll be a 2-3 zone team. We’re going to have to attack their zone and try to keep winning the rebound battle. The games we played really well, it seems like we won the rebound battle. And we’re looking forward to it.”

Clarion-Goldfield-Dows (4-8) enters off a 78-47 win over Pocahontas Area Tuesday and has won three of their last four. The tipoff will be at 7:45 p.m.
The #19 (2A) boys wrestling team will join #2 (2A) Algona at a triangular at Clear Lake. Head Coach Patrick Hansen says as January continues, taking care of the little things is a key.

“For some reason we’re on bottom, we’re just not fighting hands or reaching back and stuff like that, just little stuff,” Hansen says. “We gotta get in better shape, just a lot of little things. We got most of the things down, but we’ve got a core group of seniors and stuff. And really, I’m gonna lean on them to push everybody through this at the end. And you get these late night duals and then you’ve got a Saturday and you’ve got a Tuesday and then a Thursday. And if we can just keep our heads, keep a positive attitude, keep your work ethic, the sky’s the limit.”

The triangular will start at 6:00 p.m.
