The Clarksville girls basketball team sprinted out to a double digit advantage to earn the win and the Clarksville boys got out to a slow start but battled to the finish in loss, as part of a Iowa Star Conference North doubleheader at Don Bosco on Tuesday. The Clarksville girls won 61-38 and the Don Bosco boys won 67-38, as aired on 99 The Wave.
In the girls game, Clarksville set the tone for the game with full court pressure, pulling out to a 19-5 first quarter lead. The Indians led 31-16 at the half, aided by a 17 point first half by Paige Kampman. The Indians increased breathing room with a 16-9 scoring run in the third quarter to go up 47-25. The Indians led by as many as 23 in the final frame, to close out three straight win.
Paige Kampman had 30 points including five triples and Hannah Wangsness added 11 points for the Indians.
Clarksville Head Coach Ross Timmermans on three game win streak and performance of Kampman.
“That’s where we wanted to be, going into Riceville on Friday. That was the goal. We are where we want to be right now. Our girls really did a great job, especially when it got tight there, Don Bosco made a nice little run. We did a really good job of sustaining that run, coming out and then hitting, two threes and getting a steal on the layup and then spreading it back out, ultimately to where it was at the end of the game,” says Timmermans. “That first quarter, she really got going. I think she had 12 points in a row for us and we got out to that 12-0 lead. I figured she probably had a pretty solid night. I’m really excited about the confidence that she brings to our team and hopefully we can continue that.”
In the boys game, Clarksville struggled with Don Bosco’s full court man to man defense and fell behind 25-6 after the first quarter. Clarksville had a better offensive second quarter, putting up 15 points but trailed 37-21 at the half. Don Bosco extended their advantage to 58-34 in the third quarter and led by as many as 30 in the final frame to wrap up their fourth straight win.
Sam Hoodjer had 24 points including four triples to lead the Indians.
Clarksville Head Coach Jonah Woodward on the performance of Hoodjer and growing balanced scoring around him.
“He does so much for us on a night in and night out basis. He had 24 points unofficially, seven rebounds, three blocks and a couple assists as well. Everyone in the conference and the state knows, if Sam’s going, our team is going,” says Woodward. “Basketball is a team game, it’s not just one guy. Obviously, Sam’s very important to us. But we need to get some other guys going consistently on a night in and night out basis, where they’re getting 10, 12 points, and playing good team defense. We’re struggling with that right now, but we’re coming in and grinding away at the little things we need to get better at. This team is going to be very fun to watch at the end of the year, and I can’t wait to see what they look like.”
The Clarksville girls (9-4, 6-2 Iowa Star North) and the Clarksville boys (3-11, 2-7 Iowa Star North) will host Riceville on Friday.
