The Clarksville girls set the tone with defense and led by as many as 20 to battle out a 47-27 win at Tripoli. The Clarksville boys ended a four-game slide behind a strong start, aided by a 48-point performance by Senior Sam Hoodjer, which was a career and single game school record in a 76-57 win over the Panthers, as aired on 104.9 KLMJ on Tuesday.

In the boys game, Clarksville took command from the opening jump by running out to a 25-9 lead after the first quarter, behind on-ball pressure and 14 point first quarter by Hoodjer. The Indians maintained a double digit advantage into halftime up 38-26. For a majority of the second half, the Indians protected a 12 point lead and only allowed the Panthers to get close as within nine points. The Indians led 56-44 at the start of the fourth and closed out the game, outscoring the Panthers 20-13 to secure the season series sweep.

Clarksville Senior Sam Hoodjer on sharing the win with the team and managing his leadership role.

“It was just good to get the team win and get back in the win column. Thanks to my teammates for getting me the open looks. It was just falling for me tonight. Just a good team win. It’s going to be a lot of momentum, going into practice and into our next game.,” says Hoodjer. “It just comes down to practice and how you play every single day, coming in and having the guys get a lot of energy. Coach does a great job with that. Walking in, we are always clapping it up and just always having a good time. Remembering that it’s just basketball, and let’s always have fun.”

Hoodjer added 10 rebounds on the night to complete a double-double. John Stauffer added 13 points for the Indians.

In the girls game, Clarksville jumped out to a 13-4 advantage after the first quarter, led by a 10 point quarter by Paige Kampman. The Indians navigated a cold shooting start to the second quarter, to extend their lead to double digits at 23-10 at the half. Clarksville outscored the Panthers 24-17 in a defensive second half, to earn the season series sweep. The Clarksville defense held the Panthers to the second lowest point total they’ve allowed this season.

Clarksville Head Coach Ross Timmermans on difference maker to stay ahead of the Panthers and team win.

“Something had to give there. They’re physical, we’re not nearly as big and strong as they are. We had to try to pick up the pressure, pick them up, speed them up and that’s what we did, especially in that end of third into the fourth quarter. I thought that’s when we finally kind of separated a little bit. We had a big shot from Jeni Johnson. We had a couple big shots from Emily Manwarren there, to put the ball through the hole from behind the arc, that kind of separated it for us,” says Timmermans. “One thing that we preach is no matter if the ball is going through or not, you got to play some defense. I thought that we did a really good job of that tonight. We played a full, complete team game. Everybody got minutes. Everybody contributed in some way, shape, or form. I was very happy with the effort that everybody gave.”

Paige Kampman paced the Indians with 22 points and Emmalee Manwarren added nine points.

The Clarksville girls (10-6, 7-3 Iowa Star North) and the Clarksville boys (4-12, 3-8 Iowa Star North) will host Dunkerton on Friday.
