The Aplington-Parkersburg basketball teams each defeated Wapsie Valley in their final regular season away games Thursday. The girls won 61-49 and the #9 (2A) boys won 71-44.
In the girls game, the Falcons found themselves trailing 15-14 after the first quarter. But a big second quarter helped their cause, outscoring the Warriors 17-9 in the period. But Wapsie Valley was resilient, cutting their deficit to 45-43 at the end of the third quarter. One of the stronger defensive quarters of the season by the Falcons resulted in AP pulling away for a double-digit win by holding the Warriors to six points in the period. Eva Walker led with 18 points, Kolbie Wangsness added 12 and Peyton Klooster scored 11.
In the boys game, the Falcons jumped out to a 17-7 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back. A 20-point second quarter allowed the Falcons to extend their lead to 37-17 at halftime, but Wapsie cut it to 17 after three. In an identical score to the first quarter, AP outscored the Warriors 17-7 in the fourth quarter to seal the win. Benny Waller led with 19 points, Tyler Wedeking scored 17 and Caleb Campbell added 11.
AP will return to action Friday by hosting an NICL crossover doubleheader with Union. The doubleheader will start at 6:15 p.m.
